Turkish President Abdullah Gul has indicated that Israeli troops should pull out, the blockade should be lifted and Gaza should be rebuilt for the cease-fire to be durable.
President Gul said at a news conference held after an international meeting on the Gaza Strip in the Egyptian resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh under the auspices of President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, "it is of vital importance that the parties declared cease-fire after a grave destruction in which a number of people were killed and many others were injured."
"President Mubarak 'exerted great efforts' in search of a cease-fire in the region. Turkey also pursued a shuttle diplomacy among Cairo, Damascus and Tel Aviv to contribute to the cease-fire. Now, we must ensure that the cease-fire is mutual and durable and we must ensure that Israel completely withdraws from Gaza. Israeli troops should pull out, the blockade should be lifted and Gaza should be rebuilt for the cease-fire to be durable," he said.
"On the other hand, there are lots of things to be done in the medium and long term. Palestinians should form a government through compromise. And, all countries in the region should exert efforts to ensure peace in the region. Also, the new government of the United States should find a lasting solution. Otherwise, all this tragedy can be lived once again," he said.
Following the news conference, President Gul partook in a luncheon hosted by President Mubarak of Egypt in honor of the participating heads of state and government. Besides President Gul, President Nicolas Sarkozy of France, President Mahmoud Abbas of Palestine, King Abdallah II of Jordan, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi of Italy, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero of Spain and Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa were in attendance at the luncheon.
Later, President Gul left Egypt for Turkey.
