The Constitutional Court has sent the ruling Justice & Development (AK) Party's defense to the Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Prosecutor's Office.
The AK Party, yesterday, submitted its 402-page defense about merits of the case filed by Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Prosecutor Abdurrahman Yalcinkaya with the request of closure of the political party.
After examining the defense the chief prosecutor will make a verbal statement while AK Party executives will deliver their defense verbally.
Later, a rapporteur to be appointed by the Constitutional Court will write a report about substance of the case by collecting information and documents. During this process, both the Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Prosecutor's Office and the AK Party will be able to submit new evidence or additional defense.
After the report is distributed to 11 members of the Constitutional Court, Hasim Kilic, chief judge of the court, will set a date for a meeting. Members of the court will convene on that date to begin debating the merits of the closure case against the AK Party. They will announce their verdict later.
Under the Constitution, majority of votes is required to outlaw a political party. Accordingly, at least 7 of 11 members of the court need to vote in favor of the closure of the party.
The Constitutional Court can also rule to deprive the AK Party of financial assistance of the Treasury instead of closing it down.
