Turkish troops kills 22 PKK militants

General Staff said it had launched the operation in Sirnak province near the Iraqi border on July 11 after locating a group of Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants there.

Turkish troops have killed 22 PKK militans in an operation over the last five days in southeast Turkey, military headquarters said on Tuesday.

General Staff said that 22 terrorists including a leading member of the PKK had been neutralized during security operations in Incebel mountainous region in the southeastern province of Sirnak from July 11th to 14th. 

General Staff also stated that hide-outs of terrorists in the region were destroyed, and their weapons and ammunitions were seized. 

Security forces returned safely to their bases after the operations were completed, added the General Staff.

Sabah newspaper had reported that F-16 fighter jets had been bombarding the rebels along the border during the operation in which 500 soldiers took part.

PKK shelters, weapons and ammunition were destroyed in the operation, the military statement said.
