Two people have been arrested for allegedly starting two of many fires that have claimed at least 49 lives and destroyed dozens of Greek villages.
Police arrested a 65-year-old man after witnesses alleged they saw him set fires in southern Peloponnese near the town of Areopolis, CNN reported Sunday.
A 77-year-old woman was arrested for negligence for allegedly sparking a fire while cooking in her garden in Zaharo, an area especially hard hit by wildfires in southern Greece, CNN reported.
Other fires were suspected to be the work of political extremists trying to disrupt campaigning for the Sept. 16 national elections, CNN reported, noting police were investigating a gas canister found attached to a cell phone on the outskirts of Athens.
"So many fires sparked simultaneously in so many places is no coincidence," Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis alleged, vowing to punish those responsible.
The fires have been made worse by a heat wave and intense winds throughout Greece.
