Two firefighters were killed and at least 18 others were injured Saturday after a bank building overlooking New York's Ground Zero site caught fire, the New York Fire Department said.

The blaze occurred when scaffolding caught fire on the former Deutsche Bank building.

The firefighters died as a result of cardiac problems following smoke inhalation, said department spokeswoman Eileen Ramos.

"We have 18 firefighters that have been taken to the hospital, but we believe none of them have life-threatening injuries," she told AFP.

Firefighters put out the blaze but smoke continued to rise for several hours, appearing thickest around the 15th floor of the 40-story building.

The skyscraper was under construction after being pulled down following the attacks of September 11, 2001, fire battalion chief Wes Schelling said.

Those airplane attacks destroyed the 110-story towers of the World Trade Center, which once stood on the site at the southern tip of Manhattan island.
