Two Russian soldiers were killed by "unknown attackers" in the capital of Russia's troubled province of Chechnya, local police said Wednesday.

Late Tuesday in the city of Grozny, "attackers opened fire with automatic weapons and grenade launchers on Russian interior ministry forces. As a result, two soldiers were killed," Chechen police spokesman Amin Deniyev told AFP.

Deniyev also said that in the village of Gekhi, police had found and destroyed a homemade bomb equal to 35 kilograms (77 pounds) of TNT, which they expected was to be used in an attack.

Localized fighting between Chechen and troops loyal to Moscow remains frequent in the Caucasus province, despite Moscow declaring victory in a second war there.
