A German who hurled a bottle at a group of Iraqi children and punched a man who came to their defence was sentenced Wednesday to two years in jail by a court in the city of Schwerin. A case against another alleged racist attacker is pending.
In the April incident, the man, 21, yelled Nazi phrases at the passing children, threw the beer bottle towards them and punched a man, 45, who was accompanying the group and intervened.
The defendant, who has several previous convictions, confirmed in court that he was a neo-Nazi. Judges rejected suggestions that the sentence be suspended. Schwerin is located in formerly communist eastern Germany.
