UN chief expected to visit Gaza on Tuesday

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is expected to visit the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, Israeli sources said on Monday.

Ban, on a Middle East tour, will also visit southern Israel during his stay.

Ban will be the first world figure to visit Gaza following Israel's 22-day devastating offensive, which killed more than 1300 Palestinians, a third of them children.

Ban had said he would like to visit Gaza before returning to New York later this week, provided the security situation had improved. A ceasefire went into effect on Sunday.

U.N. officials travelling with Ban were not immediately available to comment.
