"Zimbabwe's stalled power-sharing deal will not work as long as Robert Mugabe remains president", a U.S. envoy said on Sunday.
"We think he has reneged on the principle of power sharing and the United States will not reverse sanctions as long as he remains in power," U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Jendayi Frazer told reporters in Pretoria, announcing a shift in U.S. policy toward Zimbabwe.
America's strict stance on Zimbabwe comes at a time when Mugabe announced last week that that he would never surrender to Western pressure to resign.
Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai agreed on Spet. 15 to form a unity government, a pact supported at the time by the United States. But the agreement has since deadlocked as the parties fight over control of key ministries.
