Serbian police said Tuesday they have arrested a senior U.S. Steel Serbia official for allegedly taking bribes.
Assistant general manager Bratislav Culafic was detained last week while accepting part of the agreed bribe from a business partner, police said.
Culafic is accused of requesting a car, a computer and $13,659 from a New York-based company while promising to secure a deal worth $3.5 million, police said.
There was no immediate comment from US Steel Serbia.
U.S. Steel Serbia is owned by Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel Corp., which bought Serbia's biggest but bankrupt steelmaker, Sartid Co., in 2001. The factory has revived production since 2001, becoming one of Serbia's most successful companies. It has annual raw steel capacity of 2.4 million net tons.
