Five people have been killed and several injured in violent storms and high winds which swept Poland and Slovakia, causing widespread power outages, emergency services said on Saturday.

Many districts, particularly in south and west Poland were without electricity. Branches of trees fell on roads, causing several accidents, reported AFP.

On Friday night in Poland a tree fell on a holiday home at Kalina in Silesia, killing a man, while a 17-year-old girl was crushed to death by beams falling in her home in Rusinowice. In Lodz a man was electrocuted after a power-line came down on him.

The violent storm struck around midnight when a local band was on stage in the amphitheatre.
