Muslims across world embraces Friday new Islamic lunar year that marks hijrah (migration) of the Prophet Mohammad from Mecca to Medina.

The Muslim calendar is lunar, and its months are determined by the various positions of the moon. Now Muslims are into the new Islamic year 1431.

In Philippines, the new leadership of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) took time to join President Arroyo in greeting the Muslim world on the occasion of the Islamic New Year's fete.

In United Arab Emirates (UAE), President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa congratulates the Muslims' event. He wished good health and happiness to them and progress, prosperity and dignity to their peoples, WAM reported.

Meanwhile, Nİgerian Muslims were urged to offer special prayers at today's J'umah service, a statement issued by the Acting Secretary of the Sultanate Council of Sokoto said.

In Azerbaijan, the Caucasus Muslim Board (CMB) issued a fatwa in connection with the beginning of Muharram month (First month of the Hijri year).

The CMB calls on all believers to observe the public order in all mosques and mass prayer areas.

"Collision of interests of different circles is inadmissible on this day. The sanctity of Maharram should be preserved,' the fatwa said.

In each month of the Islamic calendar is either 30 or 29 days depending on the position of the moon.

That occurred in year 622 on the Christian calendar. However, because an Islamic year is shorter, more than 1387 have since passed for Muslims.

Also, Singapore gave the message for embracing all Muslim immigrants the same way they have opened their doors to non-Muslims in recent years.

The call was made on Thursday by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) president Alami Musa, who urged Muslim community leaders to adopt the inclusive approach they took in working with others groups in Singapore to bring people of various faiths together.
