Yushchenko says Ukraine PM to disrupt presidential election

Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said on Tuesday that Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko was readying herself to disrupt next Sunday's presidential election in which she is a front-runner.

Yushchenko made the public attack on Tymoshenko, once his ally in the 2004 "Orange Revolution" that brought him to power, at a televised news conference.

"The main threat to the results of the election, to their objectivity, comes from the candidature of Tymoshenko," he said.

"I am convinced she is ready to launch any social action and disregard any result of the election and this person will value neither laws, nor democracy, nor the supreme decision of voters," he said.

Yushchenko, swept to power after weeks of protests in 2004 against electoral fraud, is unlikely to be re-elected, opinion polls show.

Instead, Tymoshenko and former Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich -- a Moscow-backed candidate in the 2004 election that Yushchenko eventually won in an unprecedented third round of voting -- are expected to face each other in a Feb. 7 run-off poll.
