A moonlit photograph of African migrants in Djibouti trying to get a signal for their phones from nearby Somalia has won first prize in the 2014 World Press Photo awards.

Taken by US photojournalist John Stanmeyer, the photo sparks debates on a number of issues including technology, globalisation, migration, poverty, desperation, alienation and humanity, according to panel member Jillian Edelstein.

Stanmeyer, who took the photograph for National Geographic magazine, said he was honored to come first out of around a hundred thousand entries, telling reported that everyone can connect to it in one way or another.
