World Bulletin / News Desk

India has put in a request to Australia to return to ancient hindu statues which it claims were stolen.

Australia's National Gallery has removed one statue, an idol of the Hindu god Shiva, which it has purchased in 2008 for $5m. Another statue was also removed from display at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

It is believed that the dealer from which they were bought, Subhash Kapoor, looted the artefacts. The dealer is currently on trial in India.

All together, Australia has purchased 22 items from Kapoor's New York based company.
