A careful look at traditional Albanian fashion portrays the Ottoman spirit which is an integral part of the culture in Albania. The designs are an outcome of a long and tiring process and each style carries its own meaning.

Albanians are known for their strict loyalty to their traditions. Thus, traditional dresses are still in use especially in marriage ceremonies. Traditional dresses are considered to be a significant part of cultural heritage, but there is no homogeneous dressing culture in the country.

Northern, southern and central Albania all have different ways of dressing. Notebly, traditional Albanian dresses are decorated with national and religious symbols. Particularly in central and northern Albania, Ottoman designs dominate traditional styles in Ishokdra, Berat, Tiran, Elbasan and Kruya.

Unique from other parts of the country, southern Albanian cities display more of a Greek influence. Albanian women often wear a long dress with a wool belt and matching cloak. Men wear a long shirt, large trousers and a cloak. Red belts are a complementary.

A tailor who produces traditional dresses, Adber Shahini, underlined the long process needed labor to produce these dresses. "It is grueling to produce these traditional dresses. Girls preparing for marriage prefer them. To produce one dress takes at least two months. You can see Islamic designs in Ishkodra. Women's clothing is more complicated and differ according to marital status, whereas men's clothing is relatively simple," he said.

As an Albanian who saw many Albanian rites, weeding and deaths,I can say that there are some elements of Ottoman period in dresses but we all know that these dresses are not Albanian dresses.Same when we wear jeans,we know that they are not Albanian dresses, also about Ottoman dresses,we don't call them as Albanian traditional dresses. What we call Albanian traditional dresses, are not mixed with any of other cultures dresses, because they are very old. Albanians knows when they wear dresses from Ottoman empire period, and don't call them as Albanian dresses. Just like when we wear jeans and don't call them as traditional Albanian clothes. Also, there is not a single influence of Greek dresses in Albanian dresses, but otherwise Fustanella as Albanian dress was adopted from Greek soldiers in honor of Albanian fighters for Greek independence. +Search for Albanian Xhubleta, plis, etc.+book:Goddess Athena and other cosmogonic symbols-Luljeta Dano

The writer on this article either knows nothing about Albanian culture or it is purposely trying to play down the Originality of Albanian culture. As for the Greek influence , the fustanella (the white kilts) incorporated into Greek culture are purely Albanian dresses from the beginning of time. Lord Byron painting with Albanian Dress is one of them. It was these men in white Kilts and their bravery who brought freedom to Greeks from the Ottomans.Read the history before open your mouth and dare.
