An Ottoman Turkish flag that was taken from the battlefield of Syria to England by General Edmund Allenby over 100 years ago has finally been returned to Turkey.

The flag was handed over to the Turkish ambassador in London, Unal Cevikoz, by the Turner family who had preserved the flag for almost a century.

The handover was conducted in a ceremony at Haileybury College, from which a 1918 graduate known as Edgar Turner graduated before accompanying General Allenby in the expedition to Syria.

General Allenby had entrusted the flag to Edgar Turner on their return. The flag was then passed down from generation to generation in their family, till it reached 17-year-old Jack Turner, who handed it over to the Turkish ambassador.

Ambassador Cevikoz expressed his happiness on receiving the flag, promising to display it in a suitable place.

The young Jack Turner also noted how the flag had been well-protected by his family and that he was greatly interested in learning about the Ottoman Empire. Turner also said he wished to visit Turkey one day.
