The US has returned two ancient amphoras that were taken from Turkey illegally in 1965.

The amphoras, which date back to the 4th and 5th centuries, were taken from a shipwreck off the coast of Bodrum by the wife of Kyoko Schmidt.

Turkey's Culture and Tourism Minister Omer Celik welcomed the gesture when Schmidt personally delivered the artefacts to the Turkish embassy in Washington.

The amphoras were later sent to the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations in the Turkish capital Ankara.
