In a local town of Turkey’s third largest city, Izmir, stands one of the world's oldest elevators runs on a hillside connecting two neighborhoods to each other.
Built in 1907 by a Turkish-Hebrew businessman, the outdoor elevator, which is surrounded by a brick tower, has become one of the most important tourist attractions in Izmir, with a restaurant and cafeteria which was later built in 1992.
By connecting the two neighborhoods, the 106-year-old outdoor elevator is known as the ‘Blackstone Stairs’ by Izmir’s Muslim population. The Hebrew population calls the elevator the ‘Devidas family stairs’ since a family with the surname Devidas had a house located on the hill.Last Mod: 25 Kasım 2013, 17:55
