The Mevlana Museum in the central Anatolian Turkish city of Konya has recorded its highest number of visitors since opening in 1926, with 2.93 million visitors in 2013 – almost double of that in 2012.

Home to the tomb of the great 13th century poet and Muslim mystic Jalaluddin Rumi, the museum attracts visitors from all over Turkey and the rest of the world.

Speaking to Hurriyet Daily News, museum director Yusuf Benli noted that the increasing popularity of Rumi’s poems around the world, as they are increasingly translated into the English language, plays a part in the increasing interest of visitors from abroad.

Last month, the museum hosted the Sheb-i-Arus festival in honor of Rumi, which attracted 60,000 people.
