The Turkish seasonal spring festival of Hidirellez has been submitted as a candidate for UNESCO "intangible cultural heritage" status, Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism has announced.
Turkish communities around the world celebrate Hidirellez on 6 May in the Gregorian calendar, and April 23 in the Rumi calendar, as a celebration of the arrival of spring and revival of nature.
Turkish people also celebrate the date to mark the time when Prophet Khidir and Prophet Ilyas met.
Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister Omer Celik released the message to celebrate the spring festival, saying: “Hidirellez means a refreshing of life, fortune, health and plentifulness for the Turkish people."
"Turkey has appealed to UNESCO for Hidirellez to be awarded "intangible cultural heritage" status, and we are expecting good news from them.”Last Mod: 06 Mayıs 2014, 13:21
