At least 74 Taliban fighters have been killed in security operations across Afghanistan in the last 24 hours, the country's Ministry of Interior said Monday.

“These Taliban terrorists were targeted in different parts of the country during the military operations,” said a statement released by the ministry.

The Afghan National Security Forces operations led to 36 Taliban fighters being wounded and five arrested in Kunar, Ningrahr, Baghlan Helmand, Sar-e-Pul, Kunduz, Kapisa and Zabul provinces.

The security forces also confiscated a number of weapons and explosives.

In a statement sent to media, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid contested the reports, accusing the Afghan Ministry of Interior frequently making false claims.

The Taliban ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001 before being ousted by US-led forces following the 9/11 attacks in the U.S.

U.S.-led foreign forces are scheduled to withdraw from the country by the end of 2014. And the Taliban has recently stepped up attacks on government and foreign facilities.
