Two local UN officials, who were kidnapped on Friday in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi, have been rescued, officials said.

Farrukh Saleem and Sami Nawaz were rescued from the Pipri area, located on the eastern outskirts of Karachi, after the police traced a telephone call, Ahmad Chinoy, chief of the Citizens Police Liaison Committee, told the Anadolu Agency.

"We raided the place where the two officials were being kept in chains. However, their captors managed to flee before the raid," Chinoy said.

Chinoy declined to give further details about the kidnappers and the possible motive behind the abduction.

A source though, at the agency, which deals with kidnap for ransom incidents, told the Anadolu Agency that the location of abductees was traced with the help of an intelligence agency with mobile locator capabilities.

The two UN officials, based in Hyderabad, had been in Karachi on a personal visit.
