Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani said on Wednesday that reports of CIA torture at a detention centre in his country "violated all accepted norms of human rights in the world".

Calling the report "shocking," Ghani demanded to know how many Afghans were among those subjected to painful and humiliating interrogations at a secret CIA site in the country.

He spoke in a televised address following a U.S. Senate report detailing the extent of U.S. torture in the reaction to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on American soil.

Shortly after the attacks, the U.S. led an intervention to oust the Taliban regime in Afghanistan for sheltering al Qaeda. Many of those interrogated in Afghanistan were suspected al Qaeda fighters.
