A female anti-polio worker was killed by suspected militants in Pakistan's northwestern Bannu district, city police said Monday.
Police Chief Iqbal Mohammad Khan told reporters that Yasmeen Bibi was killed outside her house by two gunmen on motorcycles.
No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack on Bibi, who was going to administer polio drops to children who were not able to be vaccinated in a recent campaign.
The alleged use of a fake anti-polio campaign by a CIA agent to locate the late Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, before he was killed in 2011, led to militants in Pakistan imposing a de-facto ban on the campaigns which they have enforced by killing anti-polio workers.
While the World Health Organization certified 11 Asian countries as polio-free last week, Pakistan is one of only three countries where polio remains endemic.Last Mod: 31 Mart 2014, 11:39
