Azerbaijan says Karabakh clash kills 5, blames Armenian troops

Three Armenian soldiers and two Azeris were killed in an exchange of fire on the Nagorno-Karabakh front-line on Tuesday, Azerbaijan's Defence Ministry said, in the latest clash over the disputed region.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Defence Ministry blamed Armenia, saying Armenian soldiers had "crossed the line of contact and tried to attack Azeri forces".

That account could not be independently verified and there was no immediate response from Armenia. Reports of clashes are often refuted by the opposing side.

Backed by Armenia, ethnic Armenians in the Nagorno-Karabakh mountain region threw off Azeri rule in the early 1990s with the collapse of the Soviet Union in a war that killed an estimated 30,000 people. A peace deal has never been reached.
