Acting Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, issued a statement on Thursday condemning Bangladesh's ruling Awami League Party, accusing them of causing anarchy across the country, threatening voters and opposition candidates, and fixing the election results beforehand.
The statement reads as follows:
“Awami League and Jubo League cadres have created relentless anarchy ahead of the 4th phase of the Upazila election. In some Upazilas, the ruling party backed candidates are threatening the voters openly. In some places, the government party supported candidates are declaring themselves winner even prior to the election.
The Awami League backed candidate in Kolaroa Upazila of Satkhira district have threatened the voters to assault and to cut their fingers in broad day light. He also asked his cadres to capture the poll centers on the Election Day to cast fake votes massively.
The law enforcing agencies are carrying out massive arrest and harassment against the Jamaat and 19 party backed candidates in various area of the country. The law enforcers had arrested several Jamaat-Shibir activists in a nationwide drive including 2 Jamaat men from Jibon Nagar of Chuadanga district and 4 from Lohagora of Chittagong.
The Awami League backed candidate has declared him winner even before the election citing that, the government has elected him chairman already. The gazette of the election commission has been published as well. It will be announced formally on 23rd March evening only.
The election commission has not taken any effective steps against the Awami League and Jubo League cadres despite their continuous violation of the electoral codes. The role of the election commission has substantiated that, another conspiracy is going on to hold another farce in the name of the 4th phase of Upazila election. We are calling upon the election commission to play an impartial role to conduct their constitutional obligation and urging the countrymen to remain aware of the government’s ill conspiracy.
In one side the government is snatching away the voting rights of the peple, while on the other, they are violating the human rights vividly. The government has re-arrested the Bogra district Jamaat ameer and party’s central working committee member while he was getting released from the prison in line with some newly filed false cases. Despite the issuance of bail order, it became an ill habit of the government to re-arrest the political leaders in now days. Such role of the government is clear violation of the constitution and the human rights and it is just negligence to the court and the judiciary. We are strongly protesting such acts of the government.
We are demanding immediate release of the all the political detainees and instant closure of the government sponsored anarchy. We are also urging the election commission to play effective role in a bid to hold a free, fair and credible election.”Last Mod: 21 Mart 2014, 17:12
