More than 60 undocumented migrants were detained in the Bay of Bengal after trying to travel from Bangladesh to Malaysia by boat on Tuesday, according to Bangladesh's coast guard.
"We have detained 66 peoples, including Bangladesh and Myanmar nationals and middlemen with two trawlers from south-eastern places in the Bay of Bengal," said Lieutenant Quazi Harunur Rashid, the head of the coast guard in Teknaf area.
Among those detained were 52 Bangladeshis and two Rohingya, from neighboring Myanmar. There were also four middlemen and eight crew members.
He said they were trying to go to Malaysia without passports, visas and official documents in a wooden trawler that was locally-assembled and powered with a small engine.
Harunur added that the detained people had most likely been deceived by the smugglers.Last Mod: 21 Mayıs 2014, 17:41
