The Batumi-Almaty railway will be inaugurated by Georgian railways on February 1.

The rail link would make a major contribution towards developing trade in Central Asia, Eastern Black Sea Exporters' Association (DKIB) Chairman Ahmet Hamdi Gurdogan said on Thursday.

"The line will extend all the way to China from Batumi...It will be possible to travel to Kazakhstan from Turkey's northeast at half the price of other methods of transportation," Gurdogan said.

Georgia's Consul General in Trabzon Paata Kalandadze emphasized the importance of the railway saying, "This project will be very important for the potential cooperation between Turkey and Georgia. It will also make major contributions to Trabzon and the surrounding region."
