Jail riot leaves senior police official dead

At least three police officers, including a deputy police chief, were killed when prisoners attacked visiting officials at a prison in Shebrghan city, the capital of Afghanistan's northern Jawzjan province, authorities said.

Provincial police chief Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani said at least 11 prisoners were also injured in the violence.

"The incident happened while the delegation was inspecting the prison and the prisoners attacked them. Col. Abdul Mohammad, deputy police department chief of neighboring Sari Pul province, and two other police officers were beaten to death." Jowzjani told.

Jowzjani added that security forces were deployed to the scene and the situation was under control in the prison where around 800 inmates are serving time.

According a police source says "The riot apparently took place after local officials decided to transfer some prisoners to Puli Charkhi jail, the central jail in the capital Kabul."
