An allegedly Al Qaeda-linked fighter found guilty of kidnapping a U.S. aid worker in Pakistan has been sentenced to death by an anti-terror court on Wednesday.

Hafiz Imran, who is said to be a member of Al-Qaeda, was found guilty of being instrumental in the abduction of Dr. Warren Weinstein from his home in the northeastern city of Lahore in August 2011.

Weinstein, 63, who is still missing, was abducted just days before he was to leave for the U.S. after spending four years in Pakistan.

Ayman al-Zawaheri, Al Qaeda's current leader, claimed the group were holding Weinstein in a video released soon after the abduction.

Pakistan has recently rescinded a six-year de facto ban on capital punishment following a mass shooting in an army-run school in the city of Peshawar on December 16, which killed 144 people, mostly children.
