Intense gunfire reverberated across the Kyrgyz capital on Thursday night as police engaged in street battles with looters who rampaged through shops and the main market in the centre of Bishkek, a Reuters reporter said.

An Interior Ministry spokesman said several hundred police were fighting about 500 looters at the market as well as in other parts of Bishkek.
