Malaysia scraps controversial detention law

Malaysia's Prime Minister Najib Razak said on Thursday that the government would abolish the Internal Security Act, which allows for indefinite detention without trial.

Speaking at a televised address ahead of the 48th anniversary of Malaysia's formation, Najib also pledged that his government would not detain any individual based merely on political ideology.

"The government gives its commitment that any individual will not be detained merely on the basis of political ideology," said Najib.

He said the law would be replaced by two new legislation which would be used against suspected militants.
