Pakistan court summons PM Sharif over foreign assets

World Bulletin / News Desk

A Pakistani High Court on Tuesday summoned 63 of the country's top politicians, including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, for transferring their assets to foreign countries.

Among those ordered by Lahore High Court's Justice Khalid Mehmood Han to appear in court on June 15 were Sharif, former President Asif Ali Zardari, cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan and former Prime Minister Chaudry Shujaat Hussein.

The petitioner Barrister Javed Iqbal Jafri claimed the respective politicians had "illegally" transferred US$3 billion in assets to foreign countries. He claimed the country would not need foreign aid if that money was brought back.

Local media have recently claimed Pakistanis hold US$7 billion in Swiss banks.
