Two days after the end of a ceasefire in Pakistan between the Taliban and security services, an army officer has been killed in an armed attack on a security patron in northwestern Peshawar, officials said.
“An army officer has embraced Shahdat (martyrdom), and two troops have been injured in the incident,” a senior military official, who does not want to be named, told Anadolu Agency.
Militants attacked the vehicle from both sides of a road separating Peshawar from troubled Khyber Agency, one of seven semi-autonomous tribal areas in Pakistan, on a routine patrol.
No group has yet claimed responsibility but the security source said militant group Lashkar-e-Islam, which has a strong presence in and around Khyber Agency, is suspected.
Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a network of different insurgent groups in Pakistan, had unilaterally ended its 40-day long ceasefire with security forces on Wednesday. Both the government and TTP say they will continue with ongoing peace talks.Last Mod: 18 Nisan 2014, 13:59
