At least 13 people were killed and 20 others were injured in a suicide attack in a market in Rawalpindi on Monday.

The market, 10 minutes' walk from the army headquarters, is in one of the most secure areas of the city, said Rawalpindi police chief Akhtar Hayat Lalika.

Police said six security personnel and seven civilians were killed in the attack near the Pakistani army's headquarters in Rawalpindi, a garrison city adjacent to Islamabad.

"The suicide bomber wrapped in a shawl and riding a bycle blew himself up when he was spotted by security personnel deployed on R.A Bazaar road. They cautioned him to stop , however he detonated his explosive-laden vest," said Police Chief Akhtar Lalika.

This was the fourth attack carried out by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in recent days. On Friday, six were killed in two separate attacks by the TTP in Karachi including three Islamist politicians and three members of a TV crew.

On Sunday, 22 soldiers were killed in the northwestern town of Bannu, which serves as supply lines for forces fighting in the nearby troubled North Waziristan. A TTP spokesman claimed the attack was in retribution for the killing of TTP leader Hakeemullah Mehsud by a US drone in November 2013.
