Pakistan “successfully” test-fired a missile capable of carrying nuclear and conventional warheads, officials said Thursday.

The Shaheen-III surface-to-surface ballistic missile is warheads to a range of 2,750 kilometers, officials said.

The launch with its impact point in the Arabian Sea was witnessed by senior army officials and scientists, according to the army's media wing Inter Services Public Relations.

"Our scientists and engineers have achieved yet another milestone of historic significance. This is a major step towards strengthening Pakistan's deterrence capability,” said Lieutenant General Zubair Mahmood Hayat, the Director General of the army’s Strategic Plans Division.

Nuclear rivals Pakistan and India have been locked in an arms race since the early 1990s. The two countries have had a hostile relationship since the partition of India after the end of British colonial rule in 1947, fighting three wars in the process.
