The death toll from torrential rains and floods in Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Azad Kashmir has risen to about 70, the News International reported Sunday.

Meanwhile, the much-awaited first spell of monsoon rains in Karachi on Saturday turned into a disaster, bringing the city to a standstill and creating immense problems for the citizens.

The heavy downpour, which started in the morning and continued till the evening, proved fatal for at least 14 people across the port city blighted by civic mismanagement.

All major roads and streets, bridges and underpasses were submerged in a mix of rainwater and sewage, as gutters overflowed unable to keep up with the torrential rain.

While the showers turned the weather pleasant, they also caused massive power breakdowns across the metropolis and many citizens had to spend almost the entire day without electricity.
