A Turkish national has been arrested in the Cambodian city of Sihanoukville on suspicion of carrying out a knife attack, local media reported Saturday.

The Cambodia Daily said the man, the owner of a boating company, was the target of an apparent revenge attack on Thursday evening in response to the stabbing.

According to reports, the Turk was driving when assailants in another vehicle fired at least 10 shots.

The man, who was arrested Friday, was identified by the Phnom Penh Post as Mehmet Tekoglu, whose Facebook profile says he runs Sea Cambodia, a company offering boat excursions and parties.

A Cambodian man was injured in the gun attack and police and the provincial governor believe the attackers were foreigners involved in the restaurant trade. A local press report said they spoke Russian.

Police said the arrest of the Turkish man stemmed from a complaint filed against him on Thursday.

Deputy Provincial Police Chief Em Voleak said the Turkish man “is the suspect who attacked another man with a knife, so we went to his boat ticket-selling business and brought him to the police station.”

Earlier Provincial Governor Chhit Sokhon said Turkish and Israeli business owners had been locked in a dispute, along with a third group of people.

Sihanoukville is a popular beach resort but its uglier side includes the 2013 jailing of two Russians and a Ukrainian for the torture of a Cambodian petty thief. Earlier this month, the organizer of a music festival was stabbed by a Russian “mafia” group and on Saturday the Phnom Penh Post reported that police were hunting a Russian wanted by Interpol for possessing explosives.

Calls to the Turkish embassy went unanswered Saturday.
