At least two people were killed and 12 injured in a roadside bomb attack at a polio vaccination ceremony in the outskirts of Pakistan's northwestern city of Peshawar on Monday morning.

"A policeman and a volunteer of a local peace committee have been killed in the roadside blast in Budhpir area" city police chief Najeeb-ur-Rehman told Anadolu Agency.

The ceremony was being held at a dispensary in the restive Budhpir area located in the suburbs of Peshawar.

The deceased and injured police personnel were detailed outside the dispensary for providing security to vaccination workers.

No polio worker was injured.

According to the city police chief, a remotely-controlled bomb was planted on the roadside just 50 meters away from the dispensary.

"As soon as the policemen got out of their vehicle, the bomb was detonated through remote control," he added.

Sounds of heavy firing were also heard after the blast, eyewitnesses said.

Polio workers have been facing troubles in carrying out anti polio vaccination campaign in various parts of Pakistan, one of three countries where polio remains endemic.
