Typhoon kills dozens in North Korea: media

Dozens of people have died in North Korea after heavy rains and landslides caused by a typhoon which hit the Korean peninsula earlier this month, state media said on Wednesday.

Heavy rains in the impoverished state over the past two months have caused severe flooding and hit food production that even in a good year falls a million tonnes short of the amount needed to feed its 23 million people.

"Several dozen people have died throughout the country due to torrential rain, strong winds and landslide," the North's official KCNA news agency said referring to Typhoon Kompasu which lashed the Korean peninsula on Sept. 2.

More than 8,300 homes were destroyed and over 30,000 hectares of farmland inundated, KCNA said. Some 65 km (40 miles) of railway tracks were washed away, it added.
