US drone strike kills 5 in Pakistan

World Bulletin / News Desk

Pakistan intelligence officials say an unmanned drone killed five militants and Pakistani airstrikes killed another 10 in the North Waziristan tribal area bordering Afghanistan.

Two intelligence officials say the drone fired missiles at a vehicle that was traveling from a militant hideout in the Shawal area toward the border late Monday. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters, said the dead militants have not yet been identified.

Pakistan’s army meanwhile says warplanes targeted militant hideouts in the Datta Khel area, killing 10 militants, including foreign fighters, and destroying a large cache of arms and ammunition.

The strike coincides with the Pakistani army's ground and aerial strikes in the adjoining town of Datta Khel, which killed 22 suspected militants earlier in the day.

According to Pakistani intelligence agencies and international human rights groups, including Amnesty International, over 3,400 people, of which nearly 70 percent have allegedly been civilians, have been killed in around 400 drone strikes since 2004.

Islamabad publicly opposes the drone strikes.
