A U.S. drone strike has killed six suspected rebels in Pakistan's troubled North Waziristan region on Thursday morning, officials said.

It was the third time the U.S. carried out an air strike in North Waziristan this year, as Pakistan's army bombards the northwestern tribal region in an attempt to root out rebel groups based there.

A senior military official told Anadolu Agency that a U.S. drone fired two missiles on a house on Dattakhel town, which sits near the border with Afghanistan. Those killed have not yet been identified, he said.

The U.S. claims its drone attacks, which have reduced in number in the last seven months, have destroyed the Al-Qaeda network in North Waziristan.

However Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and other international groups contest the U.S. claim, reporting that around 70 percent of victims are civilians.

According to figures tallied by international think tanks, and Pakistani intelligence agencies, over 3,300 people have been killed in 388 drone strikes in Waziristan since 2004.

The deceased included several Al-Qaeda and Taliban leaders, including Baitullah Mehsud, and Hakeemullah Mehsud, the two chiefs of Tehrik-e-Taliban, the primary umbrella organization for Taliban groups in Pakistan.
