US missile strikes kill 12 in flood-hit Pakistan

A pilotless U.S. drone aircraft fired on Saturday missiles into Pakistan's North Waziristan, killing at least 12 suspected fighters despite around 20 milion have suffered from devastating flood, intelligence officials said.

The United States has intensified missile strikes by drone aircraft in Pakistan's Pashtun tribal lands despite the worst flood since decades hit the country.

Also Pentagon has urged Pakistan to keep its forces in the tribal regions which U.S. wants more offensive against Taliban, despite more rescue and relief forces were need in flood zone.

Most of the missile attacks this year were carried out on militant targets in North Waziristan region.

In the latest strike, the missiles hit a house near Mir Ali, the second major town of the region.

"The death toll could be more," an intelligence official in the region told Reuters.

He said Amir Moawia, an important Pakistani Taliban commander, was among the dead.

Another intelligence official said there were five foreigners among the slain fighters but their nationalities could not be immediately confirmed.

Pakistan officially objects to U.S. missile strikes and says they infringe on its sovereignty though.
