Economics Professor Tohti who works for Minzu University in Beijing, was taken into custody last Tuesday and his situation still remains unknown. Beijing officials responded to the reason for his custody as "a suspect of violating the law".
Chinese daily newspaper the Global Times of China published only one article about the arrest and claimed that "he is not an ordinary citizen".
They said he's linked with the World Uyghur Congress and often gives aggressive lectures on Uyghur issues.
Uyghurs, who have mostly settled in the Western part of China, Xinjiang Province, often complain of employment discrimination, religious restrictions and other poor treatment as minority group living with majority Han Chinese people.
