The preliminary census results show that 3,791,622 people are living in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the state agency for statistics reports.
Out of this number, 2,371,603 people are living in the entity of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, 1,326,991 in Republika Srpska, and 93,028 in District Brcko.
The census, which is the first since Bosnia and Herzegovina gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1992, was conducted from October 1 to 15.
The last census was conducted in Yugoslavia in 1991 when Bosnia had about 4.2 million citizens. During the war, about 120.000 people were killed, while undetermined number of people fleed the country as refugees.
In the Federation, most of the people in Bosnia, the Agency reports, lives in the Tuzla area, central Bosnia (477,278), while the least lives in the area of Gorazde, eastern Bosnia (25.336).
The most populated in Republika Srpska is Banja Luka with a population of 199,191.
"These are not the final data. We are yet to process the data and scan all census material," director of the Agency for Statistics Zdenko Milinovic told members of press in Sarajevo.
The final results of the census should be public in the July 1, 2014- 2016 period.
