Turkish Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Ahmet Yildiz said on Saturday that the first president of Bosnia and Herzegovina Alija Izetbegovic was a great leader and he remembered Alija with his painful face, which reflected the sadness of pain, slaughter, genocide and rapes of his people

On the tenth death anniversary, Bosniak politician Alija Izetbegovic, renown as 'Wise King', who achieved to bring independence to his home country despite all difficulties, is commemorated in Bosnia Herzegovina where Ambassador Yildiz also was present during the ceremony.

"When the war took place in the former Yugoslavia and an armed attack was staged on Bosnia and Herzegovina, I was in Libya as a young diplomat, and later in Germany. Attacks on Bosnia were felt in Germany because there were always women and children fleeing Bosnia," said Yildiz.

Yildiz stated that Alija Izetbegovic always stood still as a strong leader, and his face reflected the determination and will of his people to gain their freedom.

"Then I found out about Alija. I remember that his face reflected the pain of Bosniaks, all the murders, rapes and genocide against the people. But great people never give up in such difficult situations. Alija has helped to preserve the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina and granted the freedom of his people," said Turkish Ambassador.

He added that the whole world wanted Bosnia and Herzegovina to finally become a peaceful country.

"Bosnia is still not a functional state as expected, but the whole world wants to see Bosnia as a normal country where everyone lives peacefully," he said.

He reminded that Alija Izetbegovic left Bosnia at the behest of Turkey.

"Turkey and Bosnia and Herzegovina always had strong and close relations in all fields and we will continue supporting Bosnia and Bosnian people in the future.  As Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan reminded at the awards ceremony of "Isa Bey Ishakovic"  last year, Alija has left Bosnia at the behest of Turkey,” Yildiz told AA.

Alija Izetbegovic (August 8, 1925 – October 19, 2003) was a Bosniak politician, activist, lawyer, author, and philosopher who in 1990 became the first President of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was also the author of several books, most notably Islam Between East and West and the Islamic Declaration.
