A rally in Sarajevo on Wednesday will show solidarity with the people of Aleppo, as civilians in the last remaining rebel-held neighbourhoods in the east of the besieged Syrian city waited for help after pro-government forces closed in.
Cultural and civil society associations have jointly organised the demonstration, which will take place outside the BBI shopping mall in central Sarajevo at 3pm.
"As a city that has survived the longest siege in the era of modern warfare, as the citizens of Sarajevo, we want to say to the people of Syria that we understand the suffering and terror they are going through, and at the same time invite the world’s powerful to respond adequately – which is why we expect a great response to this event,” said a statement by the Organising Committee for the rally, published on the website of participating NGO the Coordination of Bosniaks.
The rally forms part of the global #StandWithAleppo campaign, and organisers stressed that it was for people of any religion or political beliefs.
