A 16-year-old British teenager intended to arrange an attack on his former school, using the massacre in Littleton, Colorado, USA on April 20, 1999 as an example.
He was arrested after being found with a machete. Police also found explosives at his home, including partially-assembled gasoline bombs.
In addition, the schoolboy named a local mosque, a cinema, Loughborough University, and his college as targets for the attack.
Prosecutor Max Hill said the teenager kept a book called "Spree Killers" and had noted down the number of people killed at the Columbine High School in Littleton and by Anders Behring Brevik in Norway in 2011.
