World Bulletin / News Desk

The Bulgarian municipality of Varna has refused to sign a bill that would change the name of 215 place names in its province from their original Turkish names to Bulgarian.

The proposal fell short of the 26 votes needed to pass the new names, with only 22 voting in favor of it. While 9 voted against it, 7 abstained.

İvan Vekilov, the governor of Varna, accepted the outcome of the meeting on Monday, but the proposal will once again be voted on today.

Many NGO’s set up by native Turks living in Bulgaria expressed their opposition to the decision to change Turkish place names to Bulgarian in January.
